Founded in 1892 by Helena Achtenberg in the town of Winshire, Maine, the school was originally known as "Winshire Preparatory School". The school was later renamed after Achtenberg's death in 1939, in memory of its founder. Achtenberg's current Headmistress, Gabriela Penner, has upheld the institution's pillars of educations and self-improvement since she was instated in 1989. She is also well known for expanding the campus to accommodate adult learners as well as traditional learners. Achtenberg currently accepts young women from ages 12 to 21, and offers a great number of scholarships and work-study opportunities for those unable to afford the tuition out of pocket.
